After being renovated for the 1974 World Cup and 1988 European Championships, the old Waldstadion was demolished on the city council's call in time for this summer. In its place goes a stadium by the same name but with increased comfort and no little style.
Not unlike the Olympic Stadium in Athens, the Waldstadion was built at a cost of £90million, after the council rejected plans for the old home of Eintracht Frankfurt to be updated one more time. A retractable roof led to Mayor Achim Vandreike dubbing the stadium "the world's largest cabriolet". Steep stands suggest it will be a popular stadium for fans keen for a good view of the action.
